Prelim

We were asked to do a short film based on what we have learnt. The main things being Match on action, 180 degree rule and Shot reverse shot. The task was to make a film of someone walking through a door and walking across an area to have a short conversation with someone using all the techniques above. We did this by using the door into our classroom were Curtis walked through the door to have a conversation with me and Ben doing the filming by using our plan of the shot types and techniques we had previously made. By doing this this helped us understand Match on action, 180 Degree rule and short reverse shot and why they are used.
I have learnt that Match on action is an editing technique that cuts one shot to another shot still portraying the action of the first shot.I have now understood that this needs to be done to create a sense on continuity.I have also learnt that the 180 degree rule is the camera angle and that it is important to keep to this rule as it helps the audience have a greater sense of location this is also used in conversation and shot reverse shot. I have also learnt hat shot reverse shot is used to show characters having conversations as it is used to show what character is looking at. We did this by using shots like over the shoulder shot and mid shots.Next time we intend to make our editing more accurate , create a more mysterious feel and possibly different actors/ actresses!

Final Cut express impressions

i found final cut express hard to work i thought it was hard to find the tools to edit film.i also found it confusing to work all the different short cuts . however i got more use to the programme as we did more editing . i found it easy to drag shots and to cut the scenes. i also found putting the transitions in easy but over all i found this tricky to work as it was not clear where all the different tools where and what they did.

different events made and imported data such as videos and pictures for video

Different transitions and effects to add to video

Different editing tools such as blade and select tool.

Atonement

Atonement

( Joe Wright , 2007 )

Budget:  $30,000,000 (estimated)

Producers:

Distributors:

WIKI , Official Site

The opening 30 seconds :
The title is shown and typed like type writer which you can hear as the intro music it is bold loud and makes a point from this point you can tell this is going to be serious drama. This then continues as we get a close up of the dolls house(which we later find out is there house) this is a clever way of showing inside the house and out and setting the scene.

The titles continues and sets the scene 'England 1935' this sets the period as we know it is just before the 2nd world war as the type writer continues we get a moving image of the room as the camera continues to set the scene showing a close up of the toys and furniture we can then tell it is a younger characters bedroom. The Type writing becomes significant and louder as we are slowly introduced to the character also creates a rhythm and almost a audio bridge now and later on .There is little editing as it is all one shot as the camera is moving round the room.We are now introduced to the setting .

Then we see a master shot were we see the room and the character this shot then zooms into a over the shoulder shot which shows us she is the one typing.
Then camera shot goes to a close up and further into an extreme close up as we  are shown characters eyes this helps us to feel the characters emotions and perhaps what she is typing about. we can tell this is serious as the typewriter continues to pick up a beat.

The camera then zooms in from a close up at a mid shot up the type writer to text where it says 'the end' in the same text as the titles were written in at the start. This links the opening and helps sets the period drama. As the girl gets up the paste again continues with type writer into a beat although it is no longer typing. it builds the suspension and builds up to something which could be a tragedy.we then have a etblashing shot from across the hall way where we again see the inside of  this old house. We straight awayalso notice from the clothes and would beams this family is not poor.

Other Meadows Openings

Dead Man Shoes

this was the opening 4 mins and 15 secs.made 6 m in US cinemas it was played on 4 screens and sis not make the UK cinema. It has appeared in several lists of best films of all time. This film is also a shane meadows film and follows the auteur theory.
The opening is a home movie as it has washed out colours ans cracklyness it is also shaky as it is a hand held camera this gives a sense of a social background. The music is down beat and sad to communicate with audience it shows us it is going to be sad.the music is digetic and an audio bridge as it links scenes together The clothing is middle class this also shows its a drama.
There is a cross fade which shows back and now in the film. The conventions of 2 shots shows there friendship is strong. The setting is bleak which could signify the stories tragedy. There is narrative inigma when you attentionally hold back to create a sense of mystery. There is a final fade out from white to black and black to white at the opening this is editing technique.

24/7

(1996 shane meadows )
BBC films and scala Productions

You get non digetic music straight away there are not many names mentioned only bob haskins and shane meadows names are mentioned.t is also unusual as it is in black and white.
We first have a long shot and establishing shot which are very bleak and show the idea of serious drama. The music stops after 1 min 40.The long takes indicate drama and emphasis the sound. The font used are both upper and lower case to make names stand out. There are also lots of panning shots used. There is a voice over that shows exposition.the opening is 6 mins 20 in total
over all this film made 175,000 in uk box office.

A Room for Romeo Brass

Budget: $6,713

Production : Alliance Atlantis Communications,Arts Council of England
Big Arty Productions

A room for romeo brass failed to get into the UK cinema it got a very brief cinema release 20k.
production companies where Alliance Atlantis CommunicationsArts Council of EnglandBig Arty Productions these are often used in low budget films.
The story line of this film is Two twelve-year-old boys, Romeo and Gavin, undergo an extraordinary test of character and friendship when Morell, a naive but eccentric and dangerous stranger, comes between them. Morell befriends with the two boys and later asks them to help him pursue Romeo's beautiful elder sister. He gradually becomes more violent after she rejects him ...
The first shot we see is an establishing  shot this shot last 70 seconds this tells us it is going to be a serious drama due to the lack of editing .
There is only one company ident used. This film is also by Shane meadows film so it also follows the alter theory like all his other films 'a Shane meadows film' this makes his name more recognizable and like it is his .
The mis en scene is in a poor area after the music starts. The music is played over the first scene it is light hearted and jolly. it is an audio bridge as it links the scenes together.
There are alot of 2 shots in this opening to show the relation ship of these characters it also shows they are equal as not one of them has power over the camera at any time. The complete opening for this film was 5 mins and 39 secs.
